New Findings on the Brain’s Pleasure Center

Friday, May 21st, 2004

Place hungry people inside an MRI and feed them different food items from tasty to no-so-tasty to find out what is happening to the human brain.

Spectroscopynow.com pointed to research results obtained by British Scientist at the University of Oxford which indicated that: “Fatty mixtures fired up an extra brain region called the cingulate cortex, which is tickled by other pleasurable experiences such as a caress, a perfumed scent or winning money.”

No wonder I fall prey to french fries!

Color Therapy (chromotherapy)

Friday, May 14th, 2004

According to this site, color therapy is the fastest growing spa treatment in the United States. In addition, they said: “Science is now confirming that different colors interact with the endocrine system of the body to stimulate or inhibit hormonal production. Hormones directly affect our physical, emotional, and mental states. In fact, color travels through the eyes directly to the brain’s hypothalamus to affect the various functions within the body ….”

Special Reports on Para Medical Device And Therapy

If you kept a log on what is being pushed on TV and Cable Infomercial, you may have noted the comings and goings of several medical products or treatments. Remember those muscle stimulators that were advertised by more than one company? Why did they disappear? How about these small hand-held electric zappers that was suppose to make pain temporarily and instantaneously disappear? Yeah! where are they know? Some of the company have been caught “converting” BBQ piezo gas lighter which could be obtained for less than one dollar out of mainland China and reselling the “modified” version more than 3000% more than what it was worth, and, in the process, may have negatively affected their customers. There are many new other products making their rounds on the infomercial circuit. It does not mean that all of them are bad—just remember the old saying: CAVEAT EMPTOR (Let the buyer beware.)

This site: http://geocities.com/kbeb3234/projects.htm provides an number of reports on this very topic.

I do not necessarily agree with all these reports as some of them my have gone too far the other way. It is SO EASY to quote one study and claim it to be “THE ANSWER.”

Anyhow, I thought that your perusal of these reports would at least create a “heads-up” type of reaction.

Again, the links to the reports are located at: http://geocities.com/kbeb3234/projects.htm

The Mother Lode for Medical Information.

Monday, May 3rd, 2004

About 10 years ago I used to sell CD-ROM copies of Medline, the premiere information resource to the medical community. It was very expensive. Today, with the advent of Internet, you can tap into the United States National Library of Medicine and do some heavy searching on Medline.

Low-cost Mosquito Repellent

Monday, May 3rd, 2004

Make your own “HOME MADE MOSQUITO REPELLENT FROM NEEM

Neem is a tropical/subtropical tree from which can be extracted an oil that is a prime insect repellant. The byproducts of the Neem tree have many other major applications in medicine—many discoveries are still being made. The Neem tree will have a major positive impact because it is safe, natural, bio-degradable, and environment-friendly.

To produce insect repellant, low-cost neem oil is mixed with coconut oil in concentrations of 1 to 2%. This type of mixture is very effective at repelling mosquitos.

Neem-based pesticide formulations which are safe, natural, bio-degradable, and environment friendly.

The Neem tree, also know in France as Azadirac de L’Inde or Margosier, has even its own foundation

The Necessity of Emotional Modulations
http://www.optimums.com/wellchp10.htm

If we were all “mind” we could wish for permanent “highs”—no more mood swings! However this article lucidly explains that modulation of the highs and lows of emotion seems essential to health. This surely sheds some new lights on my ways of thinking. The trick is to avoid extremes and maintain harmony between thought and emotion—cognitive balance is an acquired skill.

I unearthed the above from http://www.optimums.com/home.htm—a VERY interesting site.

Coral Calcium

Monday, May 3rd, 2004

The other night, a recent infomercial caught my attention. Without mentioning any names, all I can say is that it was concerning calcium, coral calcium, to be precise. Following my anciently-acquired retrieval instincts I cruised the Internet till the wee-hours of the night(hmm… morning that is) with an adequate supply of coffee. Wow! Lots of good information was unearthed, and, I was even more impressed how many people were beating their drums to sell the stuff. Immediately, I called a friend of mine, Don, a registered nutritionist working at a university hospital—no slouch, mind you. “Don,” I said, “what do you think of coral calcium?” Don did not even share my enthusiasm (one of my contagious habit). Needless to say that this lead to all sorts of “alarm bells” going off. Hey! Wait a minute I thought I was a true vicarious “Missourian” skeptic; I had to be “shown.” How the break through my mental-firewall. Ha!, yes, a fatal flaw! ... I let my emotions take over and forgot that, no matter what there are always people beating their capitalistic drums. What did it? It was the quality of the infomercial and the enthusiasm and a lot more (hmm.)

So what’s going of with coral calcium? I invite you for an eye-awakening visit to Dr. Michael T. Murray site at:

TeleMed

Monday, May 3rd, 2004

Of all the health-based web sites reviewed, telmedpak is most interesting. Did you know that Vegan mother can cause delays in a child development? Do you know how to prevent antibiotic resistance? And what are the links between your diet and mental moods? These are a few of the interesting topics covered on this site.

The word TEL in telepak should give you some hints about the site’s agenda. However, when a site is well done and really contributes to our knowledge, I have no objection to the commercial undercovers. This site contributes good stuff to all of us and this is why it deserves some attention.
