HyperPhysics

Sunday, May 23rd, 2004

The hyperphysics sites indicates that “.... HyperPhysics is an exploration environment for concepts in physics which employs concept maps and other linking strategies to facilitate smooth navigation. ....The entire environment is interconnected with thousands of links, reminiscent of a neural network ….

The rationale for such concept maps is to provide a visual survey of conceptually connected material, and it is hoped that they will provide some answers to the question “where do I go from here?”

What a great job this site is!

Common Errors in English

Yeah! I know. A couple of friends of mine are going to rub-it-in. Mea Culpa for my bad English. I can’t afford an editor and you will have to suffer with my shortcomings. But that does not mean that I do not try … I do. It’s just that the stuff will not sink in. Anyhow, I hope that the stuff you look at sinks in for you. Here is a link that explains my total confusion with this language. May my confusions help you. :)

Wits, Quotations, Insults, and Sarcasm

Now for something a little bit different, check this site out. I particularly like the WITS content. I admire the degree of intelligence and mental dexterity required to spontaneously create the verbal come backs. Winston Churchill was a master of this art.

The Thomas Register

One of the most useful set of reference books I owned in the past was a full set of the Thomas Register. If you’re an inventor, a tinkerer, an avid DIY, or a person who need to locate common and hard-to-find parts, this is the reference bible to go to—- and it is all online. The Thomas Register permits any one to locate who sells or manufactures specific parts or products.

How Things Work

And while we are on the subject of education, Bob Kudder of Philadelphia suggested that I bring the following site to your attention. For young and old alike, this site is a must for you as a reference bookmark. The owner and publisher also has a book on the same subject. The book can be ordered from their site. This is some nifty stuff. Thanks, Mr. Kuder, for the suggestion.

The Straight Dope

Here is a link to an interesting site. With “tongue-in-cheek”, they claim to be on a mission to “Fight Ignorance.” Since 1973, and they are still trying. Lets see if you need to go there! Why do pigeons bob their heads? Where are all the pigeons babies? Can you declare a “no-flight-zone” over your house? How about this: Is it possible to diet with beer? Got them all? If not, fight your ignorance and visit their site.

Publish Your Own Ezine

Have you ever gotten to urge to get on your own soapbox to vent your opinion and position, or, have you ever had to need to write a rebuttal or commentary? Or, perhaps, you have felt like you’ve been hoodwinked and had that strong urge to make justice happen—use your pen as a sword? Better yet, have you wished you could publish your own electronic magazine? Well … check http://www.zinecast.com/index.html and they will give you free space and the means to do your own thing.
http://www.zinecast.com/index.html

Check out other peoples’ newsletters. The ezine’s zinerack contains (as of mid Sept. 2001) about 58 magazines on the Arts and Humanities, 19 in Business and finances, plus a LOT more. I haven’t out the time to really check for the quality of the service or the newsletters it provides. I simply want to alert you of the service.

Arts and Letters Daily

http://www.aldaily.com/arch02.htm

The magazine Lingua Franca and its parent company University Business LLC filed for bankruptcy earlier this year. Fortunately, one of its publication, Arts & Letters Daily [ http://www.aldaily.com/ ] has been kept afloat but I don’t know for how long. I sincerely hope that the valliant efforts of the existing editors will keep this wonderful resource accessible to all of us. For now, the complete 2002 archive is available at: [ http://www.aldaily.com/arch02.htm ]and the 2001 archive at: [ http://www.aldaily.com/arch01.htm. ]

The Arts & Letter Web site indicates the following: “The Arts & Letters Daily Archive contains all links that have been removed from the main page. Most of the links in this Archive will eventually become inert. Because we do not retain copies of linked pages, we are unable either to trace or to retrieve this older material. This Archive is our only record of links that have been featured by Arts & Letters Daily. For items removed last year, see our 2000 Archive. You can also view our 1999 Archive and our 1998 Archive.”

The point is, please do not be disapointed if old links are broken. Our site, the herff.com suffers from the same symptoms. I’ve experienced a loss of 15% of my total links due to broken links in just one year.

Please visit this site and drop a note to the editors to encourage them to keep up the good work despite the the demise of Lingua Franca.
