Wits, Quotations, Insults, and Sarcasm

Now for something a little bit different, check this site out. I particularly like the WITS content. I admire the degree of intelligence and mental dexterity required to spontaneously create the verbal come backs. Winston Churchill was a master of this art.

Ask an Expert ... or... Be an Expert

The avenues for sharing information on the Internet never seize to amaze me. Take MS Encarta Expert site, for example, here you have experts on all sorts of topic. Choose the topic and simply ask a question. FREE ADVICE ... from an expert in the field. Conversely, if you are an expert, you can register with them and in no time, you will be able to help others.

The whole document can be either viewed or downloaded from their site.

One of the most valuable skill you can have in life, particularly with the Internet, is to hone your searching skills. Here are a few links that are highly recommended. Librarian's Index to the Internet

An index by Librarians for Everyone(motto on their logo). Here is a finely-tuned research tool that should be part of your intellectual mining arsenal. Consider this your personal reference librarian at your service. Quoting from their site: "The Librarians' Index to the Internet is a searchable, annotated subject directory of more than 7,500 Internet resources selected and evaluated by librarians for their usefulness to users of public libraries. It's meant to be used by both librarians and non-librarians as a reliable and efficient guide to described and evaluated Internet resources. "

Electronic Text and Publishing Resources

This set of links covers different electronic texts and publishing resources and is provided to us courtesy of uncle Sam (via the Library of Congress.)I suggest that you bookmark this site and revisit it periodically as this collection will grow.

Common Errors in English

Yeah! I know. A couple of friends of mine are going to rub-it-in. Mea Culpa for my bad English. I can't afford an editor and you will have to suffer with my shortcomings. But that does not mean that I do not try ... I do. It's just that the stuff will not sink in. Anyhow, I hope that the stuff you look at sinks in for you. Here is a link that explains my total confusion with this language. May my confusions help you. :)

The Thomas Register

One of the most useful set of reference books I owned in the past was a full set of the Thomas Register. If you're an inventor, a tinker, an avid DIY, or a person who need to locate common and esoteric parts, this is the reference bible to go to--- and it is all online. The Thomas Register permits any one to locate who sells or manufactures specific parts or products.

How Things Work

And while we are on the subject of education, Bob Kudder of Philadelphia suggested that I bring the following site to your attention. For young and old alike, this site is a must for you as a reference bookmark. The owner and publisher also has a book on the same subject. The book can be ordered from their site. This is some nifty stuff. Thanks, Mr. Kuder, for the suggestion.

The Straight Dope

Here is a link to an interesting site. With "tongue-in-cheek", they claim to be on a mission to "Fight Ignorance." Since 1973, and they are still trying. Lets see if you need to go there! Why do pigeons bob their heads? Where are all the pigeons babies? Can you declare a "no-flight-zone" over your house? How about this: Is it possible to diet with beer? Got them all? If not, fight your ignorance and visit their site.

If you never used a Web Ring to navigate the Internet's web sites, I suggest that you take a good look at it . The rings are valuable research resources. ---- Just what is a Web Ring? A Web Ring is a group of related sites (related meaning same topic) where each site places a navigation bar to permit you to move to either the next or to the previous related site in that Web Ring group. There thousands of Web Rings, and all are controlled by a Ring Master who approves all members in his/her Web Ring to assure topical continuity. More eBooks!

Bartleby.com is a preeminent Internet publisher of literature, reference and verse and gives unlimited access to books and information online, all free of charge.

A True NetLibrary

The netLibrary is one of the most comprehensive collection of online books (eBooks) and resource materials available. Users can view ebooks for a specific amount of time, at which time the ebook are automatically "checked in" again and made available to other users. Users must sign up for a (free) login account in netLibrary when checking out a book for the first time. To read offline, you must first download the netLibrary eBook Reader free software onto your computer. When the checkout period for a book is over, the file closes and cannot be opened again unless you checkout the book again. Upon second checkout, the entire eBook does not have to be downloaded again — only a new timer is downloaded. It is obvious that netlibrary.com is out there to make money. Right now a lot of libraries are getting a free trial. Please check with your local library to see if they are participating.

What about netlibrary.com's competition: Well there is some but the marketing target is different,Questia Media and Ebrary.com, are focusing their marketing efforts directly on us the consumers rather than going through libraries.

Check if your local library belongs to the NetLibrary. If not, give them a nudge!
